Brand new film’s author and you can director, Robert Rossen, sets up a good multidimensional chess game, for mortal bet, ranging from Johnny, their manager (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s partner (Ellen Drew), a great cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and an excellent scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever brother (Nina Foch) spent some time working from the gambling establishment and you can old a great corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The newest caustically epigrammatic program, the fresh cast’s suavely managed body language out of like and you will possibility, and you can Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and smartly cocky photo (in addition to his political conscience) get this to pugnacious yet , intricate spectacle a hidden antique of style.” [ ten ]

Uncommon camera basics arrive occasionally to help you escalate appeal and you may momentarily stop the attention. Solid teamplay by Robert Rossen, doubling because director-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, new copywriter and user producer, in addition to supports rendering it a soft development.” [ 11 ]

Its mostly a matter of enjoying Mr. Powell undergo their paces smartly while a big shed from actors and actresses promote your typical support. Evelyn Keyes takes on the favorable little woman who brings about brand new best in your and you will Ellen Received ‘s the sleek and you will slinky vixen who will get your towards jams. Thomas Gomez are fatty because the villain and Lee J. Cobb really does a special in a position trip as a weary police inspector who in the end shuts the way it is. Many drinking and you can smoking is accomplished by most of the concerned.” [ twelve ]
